What is Breast Augmentation?

Many women find they are unhappy with either the size or shape of their breasts. This can come from a variety of reasons, including weight loss or gain, asymmetrical breasts, genetics, or medical reasons. Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure that uses breast implants and/or fat transfer to change the shape and size of your breasts.

It is also called breast enlargement or breast enhancement by surgery. Breast augmentation, which has actually been around for over 100 years, is the most popular type of cosmetic surgery. As many as 300,000 women a year choose to augment their breasts.

Breast augmentation is often part of a mommy makeover, which may include a tummy tuck and a breast lift, too. Renuance Cosmetic Surgery Center surgeons are also experts at revision augmentation if you’d like to change the size or type of implant you have now.

Types of Implants Used in Breast Augmentation

The team at Renuance Cosmetic Surgery Center offers a full range of sizes, shapes, and types of breast implants for your augmentation surgery. Note that most implants last at least 10 years before you need to replace them, and might be covered by a warranty. Your options for implant types include the following:

Silicone

This is the most popular type of implant, with over 90% choosing silicone implants for a more natural look and feel. These implants are silicone-filled with soft silicone gel, which gives your breasts more bounce.

Saline

This kind of implant is first inserted while it’s still deflated. Once it has been placed by the surgeon, it is then filled with saltwater to your desired size.

Structured Saline

This implant is a combination of the first two. It contains an inner silicone form that is surrounded by saline.

Gummy Bear

This final type of implant is filled with a harder silicone that resists leaks and can last longer than the other types.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

Whether you have a small or large increase in your breast size, breast augmentation offers you the ability to find satisfaction with your figure in a variety of ways. For example, augmenting your breasts can help balance your overall look and create a more proportionate body shape.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast augmentation is considered outpatient surgery, and you are expected to return home the same day. Your plastic surgeon will give you general anesthesia or sedation so you will not be awake during the procedure.

Once you are sedated, the doctor will prepare the implants. Based on your customized plans, the doctor will then make incisions. The implant will then be inserted, set in place, then shaped and/or filled. After that, the doctor will close the incisions. The surgery usually takes up to two hours to complete.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

After your surgery, you’ll be taken to a recovery room to come out of anesthesia. You’ll also be monitored to make sure there are no unexpected complications from your procedure, such as bleeding or excessive swelling. Your breasts will be wrapped in dressings.

Your plastic surgeon also gives you aftercare instructions and recommendations on the types of bras to wear, including The Breast Whisperer Bra, which Dr. Brian Eichenberg invented and patented in 2015. The Breast Whisperer Bra is a specialized bra designed to be worn while you sleep at night to counteract the effect of gravity on the breasts to prevent drooping, minimize wrinkles in your décolletage, all while providing comfortable support to protect your investment for years to come. When you return home, it’s important to rest. You may need to take up to two weeks off from work, school, or other obligations. Avoid heavy lifting, housework, and driving - to avoid the seatbelt from causing discomfort at the surgery site.

Shape of Implants for your Breast Augmentation

Your Renuance Cosmetic Surgery Center surgeon helps you decide on the shape and size of your implant based on your unique body type and figure. You can also “audition” your implants with the VECTRA® 3D imaging system. The VECTRA creates a 3D digital image of your body and lets you see how different sizes and shapes of breast implants work to enhance your figure. The two main shapes of breast implants are round or teardrop.

Teardrops

These kinds of implants are tapered on top and fuller at the bottom, which mimics the shape of a natural breast. To reduce the risk of sliding out of place and creating a lopsided look, the teardrop implants feature a textured underside that helps them adhere to the underlying tissue. However, textured implants slightly raise your risk for anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, a rare form of cancer.

Round Implants

As the name implies, these implants are shaped to be perfectly symmetrical in a spherical shape.

Breast Augmentation Results

Your breast augmentation results will instantly enlarge your breasts, but the final results will still be a few weeks away due to swelling and your skin needing to stretch.

You may need to wear a bandeau or The Breast Whisperer Bra to continue to shape your breasts and keep them comfortably in place to avoid pulling or tugging, especially when you sleep. A daytime and a nighttime bra are most beneficial after a breast augmentation, particularly if you had small breasts originally or asymmetry between your breasts. It can take up to six weeks for swelling to completely fade and your new breasts to soften and feel more natural. In some cases, it can take from six months to a year before your breasts feel like a normal part of your body.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

If you are dissatisfied with the shape or size of your breasts, breast augmentation offers a variety of implants to satisfy each individual need. Whether you are simply wanting to change the size and/or shape of your breasts or would like correction for a medical reason, such as breast asymmetry or post-mastectomy reconstruction, breast augmentation at the Renuance Cosmetic Surgery Center can give you the look you’ve been searching for.

Depending on the size, shape, and type of implant you have, the costs can vary. Breast augmentation done for medical reasons, such as after a mastectomy, is normally covered by insurance providers. If your breast augmentation procedure is elective, you will likely need to pay out of pocket. The Renuance Cosmetic Surgery Center offers financing options if needed. Be sure to ask our Patient Coordinator for details during your consultation.

After you wake up from anesthesia, you will notice the increased weight on your chest, along with tightness, soreness, and/or aching in your breasts. Some women describe the feeling as if they’ve overextended a muscle.

For the next week, you are likely to feel discomfort from swelling, bruises, and/or incisions as they begin to heal. This is usually a moderate level of pain, and most patients can manage this with over-the-counter pain relievers. If you feel you need something stronger, you can also ask for prescription pain medication.

You’re augmenting your breasts because you want to have more beautiful breasts, both with and without clothing. Whenever possible, your Renuance Cosmetic Surgery Center plastic surgeon makes their incision in an area that can hide the scar. This includes placing it around the areola, in the breast crease, or in your underarm. This minimizes their visibility. In addition, they will fade over time.

If you’re interested in getting breast augmentation, the Renuance Cosmetic Surgery Center requires that all patients first come in for a consultation to establish their eligibility and create a customized plan. Ideal candidates are in general good health, are not nursing, are not pregnant, and are not experiencing breast growth. Set up a breast augmentation consultation today by phone or using the online form and find the solution you’ve been looking for.
