What is Sclerotherapy?

Unsightly spider veins (telangiectasias) can appear on your ankles, thighs, and calves. One of the most popular treatments at Renuance™ in the Riverside County area is sclerotherapy (vein therapy) – a safe, proven method of minimizing small purple and red blood vessels. Plastic surgeon Brian Eichenberg, M.D., and his experienced aesthetic nurses are so skilled at performing this no-downtime treatment that minimal if any, discomfort is involved. Find the relief you’ve been looking for through the care at Renuance Cosmetic Surgery & MedSpa.

Types of Vein Treatment

There are many ways you can address issues with your veins. You can start with self-care. This includes losing weight, elevating your legs, and avoiding standing or sitting for a long time. You can also buy compression stockings to help move blood more efficiently in your legs. If necessary, you can get prescription-strength stockings, which may be covered by insurance. There are also other treatments available for more severe situations, especially if your legs are not responding to compression stockings or other kinds of self-care.

Sclerotherapy

In this procedure, the doctor will inject your small and/or medium varicose veins with either a solution or foam that closes the veins. This will cause the treated veins to fade in a few weeks. It’s also possible that the same vein(s) may need more than one injection. You do not need anesthesia or sedation for sclerotherapy.

Foam Sclerotherapy Of Large Veins

This is another type of procedure that’s focused on your larger veins. In it, an injection with a foam solution is injected to close and seal the vein. This will allow it to fade in the following weeks, although occasionally you may need more than one treatment.

Benefits of Sclerotherapy

Spider and varicose veins can alter your self-esteem, creating frustration along with discomfort and pain in your legs. An in-office treatment can not only improve their appearance, but it can also ease your pain and discomfort.

Sclerotherapy can reduce visible veins that may make you feel ashamed, which can allow you to expand your clothing choices as you find the confidence to show your legs. In addition, there are several medical benefits to vein treatment, including alleviating pain, decreasing swelling and heaviness in your legs, increase leg mobility, improve circulation, and reduce the need for compression tights.

Your Vein Treatment Procedure

Prior to your sclerotherapy Temecula plastic surgeon Dr. Eichenberg or one of his experienced aesthetic nurses will mark the veins to be treated.

If you have large veins that require treatment, laser resurfacing typically is used first. A sclerosing solution is then injected into the vein with a micro-needle. The solution causes the vein to turn white (blanch), and then gradually disappear. A typical treatment lasts from 30 minutes to an hour. Injection sclerotherapy can be an excellent alternative to surgery, provided the patient’s venous system is not affected. You can return to your regular routine immediately. However, Dr. Eichenberg does recommend refraining from vigorous activities for the first 24 hours.

Recovery after Sclerotherapy

Dr. Eichenberg also wants his patients to understand the following points for recovery. Complete correction is not expected on the first treatment. Only about 50% to 70% of the treated vessels will be gone permanently.

Generally, 3 to 4 treatments are required for optimal results. Temecula Sclerotherapy may be asked to wear heavy-duty stockings initially to help keep treated veins closed and reduce bruising. On occasion, small clots can develop at the site of the injection. Color changes can occur in the skin where sclerotherapy has been performed. In some cases, laser treatment may be an alternative to sclerotherapy.

If there is an underlying problem with the venous system, the veins will become visible again. If you develop varicose veins during pregnancy, they can usually improve without treatment up to a year after delivery. Learn how vein treatment can enhance your appearance. Results of Vein Treatment

Your results will vary depending on the type of treatment you had. You can start to see the results of treatments for varicose veins or spider veins within three to six weeks.

If you have even larger veins treated, results can take up to four months. You may also need multiple treatments to see the best results. About a month after your procedure, you will come in for a follow-up to determine if you need more treatments, which are spaced at least six weeks apart. It is normal to have multiple treatments depending on your vein size.

Vein treatment is usually a choice if your at-home attempts to reduce pain in your legs are unsuccessful. If you’re suffering from pain, or merely uncomfortable with how your legs look, then surgery or other types of cosmetic procedures may be the best answer to improve your specific issues.

No, treating them should actually get rid of visible irregularities. It’s possible a small scar may result from the injections, but these will fade over time.

There is no need for anesthesia or sedation, although the doctor may apply numbing cream in the area of the injections. After the procedure, that may be some localized tenderness and pain from the injection and can be alleviated with most over-the-counter pain relievers. Talk to your doctor about your options.
