Gynecomastia or male breast reduction surgery is a surgical procedure to reduce overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men. The condition is common in men of every age and can be caused by hereditary, hormonal changes or as a side effect from certain drugs.
Gynecomastia can cause men to become self-conscious about removing their shirt in public or wearing tight fitting clothing. Many men will avoid social situations such as pool parties, beach or boating activities and some even avoid intimacy because of their condition.
The condition is characterized by the development of excess glandular tissue, excess localized fat or both. Men may experience gynecomastia in just one breast or both. Glandular tissue and excess skin will need to be excised while fatty tissue can be removed via liposuction. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eichenberg will determine the best method to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing result.
A good candidate for male breast reduction surgery is a man who feels his breasts are too large, is in good health and at a normal body weight. Breast development should be stabilized as well. Generally speaking, Dr. Eichenberg would like someone who has a realistic expectation for surgery.
There is no age restriction for treating gynecomastia. Usually Dr. Eichenberg will wait until boys have completed puberty (age 18-20) before considering surgery. Puberty and its rush of hormones can cause gynecomastia. When boys complete puberty the situation can and often does resolve itself. Occasionally, Dr. Eichenberg will operate on patients who are younger if the case is severely impacting a child’s life. Usually this is only done with an okay from the child’s pediatrician. For older men, the only restriction is that they must be in good general health and able to safely recuperate from surgery.
Gynecomastia is generally treated with outpatient surgery and recovery is usually 3-4 days. Some men return to work after 2-3 days. After surgery you will go home wearing a tight surgical vest to help reduce swelling. Depending on the procedure some men will go home with surgical drains to remove excess fluid. These are generally removed after the first 48 hours. Many men state that they feel sore, like they have had an extra hard workout, after surgery but most do not describe recovery as painful.
