Liposuction is designed to sculpt your body and eliminate those unwanted pockets of diet and exercise-resistant fat from areas like the hips, buttocks, saddlebags, love handles, calves, thighs, breasts, ankles, arms, back, and neck. It is usually combined with another procedure to create a desired shape.
Are You an Ideal Candidate for the Procedure?
For a lot of individuals, exercise and diet will never get rid of the stubborn fat pockets. The following are some of the most common reasons to consider liposuction:
• You have good skin elasticity and a minimal amount of excess skin. Reduced skin elasticity as a result of factors like age can compromise the results of the procedure. However, if your skin manages to maintain its elasticity, then age is not a contraindication.
• You have localized fat deposits in your arms, abdomen, thighs, and neck that remain unresponsive to diet and exercise. These may be the result of heredity.
• You are physically fit and no more than 50 pounds overweight. If you plan to lose a significant amount of weight, then you need to consult with your plastic surgeon to make sure that the procedure is safe.
• Bear in mind that liposuction doesn’t remove cellulite or tighten loose skin. The surgeon will be able to recommend other procedures for those conditions.
What Does the Procedure Entail?
Liposuction removes fat from the body using suction. During the procedure, the surgeon will place thin, small, blunt-tipped tubes called cannulae through small cuts in your skin. He will move the tubes under the skin to target the fat deposits, loosen them, and suction them out.
There are a number of techniques that facilitate liposuction. We use the most popular liposuction technique, tumescent liposuction. Tumescent is another word for swollen, and the technique is used to swell the target area temporarily.
During this technique, a tumescent solution is injected into the area. This solution features a local anesthetic like lidocaine and another medication called epinephrine that is designed to constrict the blood vessels.
When the tumescent solution is administered, it has multiple effects. The local anesthetic numbs the region to any pain or discomfort during the surgery. The solution also acts to minimize blood loss and any post-surgical pain, making the recovery process faster and more comfortable than that of traditional liposuction.
