When deciding on breast implants, there are a plethora of options regarding size, shape, and composition. But many patients fail to realize that there are also some important decisions to be made regarding placement of the breast implants.
Breast implants are placed either above or below the pectoral muscle. Placement of the implant underneath the pectoral muscle provides a more natural look and feel. They also tend to interfere less with mammograms and breastfeeding. Placement below the muscle, however, may be more painful for a few days after surgery than placement directly under the breast tissue, or over the pectoral muscle. Your plastic surgeon will discuss all available options with you in greater detail.
