As a plastic surgeon in the Temecula Valley, I see a lot of patients interested in skin treatments to reverse sun damage. Part of the treatment process includes a discussion of how daily application of sunscreen protects skin for long-lasting results.
A recent article published in Skin and Allergy News shows that daily sunscreen use is highly effective in preventing signs of aging. The study followed 903 adults (younger than 55) for 4.5 years. At the end of the experiment, those individuals who applied sunscreen daily were 24% less likely to show signs of skin aging.
At my practice, I offer a number of treatments to both help prevent and treat photoaging. For sun protection, I recommend SkinCeuticals® Sport UV Defense Active Use Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 45. This product provides superior protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays and is water resistant. Remember, however, that even though a sunscreen may be labeled “water resistant,” you still need to reapply every 2 hours.
Too Much Fun in the Sun?
Even those with sun damaged skin are not without hope. A number of new technologies can help lessen the telltale signs of aging, such as dark spots, uneven pigmentation, redness, and poor skin texture. Here are a few I recommend:
- Laser skin resurfacing
- Chemical peels
- Medical-grade skincare products
