Your Facial Implant Procedure
Prior to scheduling your surgery for facial implants, Inland Empire plastic surgeon Dr. Eichenberg will meet with you to discuss and evaluate your face’s existing contours and your specific goals. He performs two types of procedures using facial implants: chin augmentation and cheek enhancement.
Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure that can be used to improve your facial profile if you have a “weak” or receding chin. Dr. Eichenberg usually does this by creating a “pocket” or space in front of your chin bone into which an implant is placed. The incision for the pocket can be either inside your lower lip or under your chin. Each approach has its advantages. The most obvious advantage of making the incision inside the mouth is that there is no visible scar. The advantage of making the incision under the chin is that precise placement of the implant is easier to achieve.
Dr. Eichenberg also offers an alternative to chin implants known as a “sliding or advancement genioplasty.” In this procedure, the chin bone is cut and moved forward. The bone is then fixed in its new position with permanent metal appliances and screws. Dr. Eichenberg is skilled at this procedure, which is most commonly performed by oral surgeons. This operation is usually performed when a receding chin is very severe.
You may be a candidate for cheek implants if you want more prominent cheek bones or if you have facial asymmetry. The cheek enhancement procedure is accomplished by Dr. Eichenberg on an outpatient basis using either a local or a general anesthetic. A small incision is made under the upper lip, in the lower eyelid or in the hairline. Then, a pre-shaped implant is placed next to the cheek bone.
